Box Kitty

Maggie loves boxes.  I opened my package that came in the mail from my sister, but I had to wait for Maggie to inspect it first.  She even tried pulling off the tape.  She loves sticky stuff, too!  Once she let me finally open the box and remove the presents inside, it was her turn! 
 She had fun with the plastic packing material, as it made nice, krinkly noises.  Then she settled in to her next. 








Gus came along to inspect it to see what had her attention, and she hissed at him and attacked him!  I guess I need to teach her about sharing!

Christmas Danish

This is the recipe I use from my 1969 version of the Fleishmann's recipe booklet.  The newer versions you find online are a bit different.  My apologies if I am breaking any copyright laws.  Note: some versions of this give you the option of margarine or butter.  I ALWAYS use butter!!!  I don't think they would be nearly as good with margarine, but that's my opinion.


Danish Pastry
Makes 24 pastries
3 ½ - 4 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
1 / 2 cup sugar
1 1 / 2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1 / 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
2 envelopes FLEISCHMANN’S RapidRise Yeast (I use regular yeast)
3 / 4 cup milk
1 / 2 cup water
1 / 4 cup butter (1/2 stick)
2 eggs, large, room temperature, separated (or one whole egg and one separated egg)

1 1/ 2 cups butter (3 sticks)
1 tablespoon water
Confectioner’s sugar frosting
Colored sprinkles
 
Directions
In a large bowl, thoroughly mix 1 1/ 4 cups flour, 1 / 2 cup sugar, undissolved yeast, salt, cornstarch and lemon peel.
Combine milk, water, and 1 / 4 cup butter until warm.  (Butter does not need to melt.)  Gradually add to flour mixture. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer, scraping bowl occasionally. Add 2 egg yolks and one egg white, and 3/4 cup flour; or enough flour to make a stiff batter.  Beat 2 minutes at high speed, scraping bowl occasionally.   Add enough additional flour to make a soft dough, mixing just until blended. In dry Arizona, I usually wind up using 3 cups of flour.  Humid locations may use more.  I found going for a sticky dough is better.  The dough is firm, but sticks to your fingers.  That's ok.  Once you start rolling and folding it looses the stickiness, but still makes a soft, flaky pastry.  Cover tightly with plastic wrap; refrigerate 1 hours.
Spread 1 1 / 2 cups butter on waxed paper to 12 x 10-inch rectangle. Chill 1 hour.  (It helps to bring the butter to room temp to aid in spreading.)
On a lightly floured board, roll chilled dough to 16 x 12-inch rectangle. Place chilled butter on 2/3 of  dough. Fold uncovered third over middle section; cover with remaining third (This means you have to crack the butter slab in half.). Give dough a quarter turn; roll to 16 x 12-inch rectangle and fold in thirds again, as above. Turn, roll, and fold once more. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap; chill 1 hour. Repeat procedure of two rollings, foldings, turnings, and chilling twice more. Refrigerate overnight.
 On a lightly floured board, divide dough in half. Roll 1/2  the dough into a 15 x 6-inch rectangle.  Cut 12 strips, 12 x 1/2 inch.  Twist each strip and form into a circle, sealing ends well.  Place on parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.  Cover lightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.  At this point, pastries may be frozen for 3 – 6 months, if desired.

Combine reserved egg white with 1 tablespoon water.  Brush rolls with egg white mixture.
Bake at 375oF for 15-20 minutes or until golden. Remove from sheets; cool on wire rack.
Frost with confectioner’s sugar frosting and decorate with colored sprinkles, if desired.
To bake frozen pastries, remove from freezer the night before, cover with plastic wrap and let sit on counter to thaw and rise.  Bake as above.
Confectioner’s sugar frosting: 

2 C. Confectioners sugar
2 T. Milk
1 t. vanilla

Place confectioners sugar, vanilla and ½ milk in bowl and mix together.  Gradually add remaining milk, 1 t. at a time just until mix reaches consistency desired.

I thought I would add some pictures for the shaping process.  This is the dough, after sitting in the fridge overnight.  I cut it in half.



Can you see all the layers of pastry and butter???  That's what makes it so yummy and flaky.  If you want to do the math, you start out with the original of a layer of dough, butter, dough, butter, dough.  You roll this out and fold in thirds.  Roll out and fold in thirds again.  You repeat this four more times.  If you are mathematically inclined, you can calculate how many layers of dough and butter this finally comes to.  A LOT!  lol

You roll each half out to roughly  15" x 6".  It usually winds up more like 15 x 7 for me.  No big deal.  I use a quilter's ruler to do the dividing and help me cut straight.  First cut long ways in half, then each half in half, then each quarter in thirds.  This makes 12 long strips.  I use a pizza cutter to make the cutting easier.
 
Then, take each strip, and place a finger on each end and roll in opposite directions to get the twist.  I have the pizza cutter holding down one end so I could take a picture. 
 
Then, from one end of the strip, start rolling into a coil, being sure to tuck the ends in.  At this point, you can freeze the pastries.  I freeze on a cookie sheet, then place four into a baggie.  With two of us, that gives us each two when I thaw to serve for breakfast later in the year.  How many you store in each bag depends on the size of your family.  At our family gatherings back east, I baked one dozen Christmas morning and the other dozen the next morning, not bothering to freeze any.
 
So there you have it!  That's how I make Christmas Danish every year!  Once baked, I frost with confectioner's sugar frosting.  I don't make the full recipe for us,  I just take about a half cup or so of the sugar and add enough milk to make it barely runny.  The heat of the pastries fresh from the oven will help it run.  You want it just thin enough to stream off your spoon to drizzle on the pastries.  If you buy canned pastries, the tin of frosting included in them is about the consistency you want..  I have four sitting in the fridge, waiting to be baked the day after Christmas.  Cowboy has to work Christmas Day and I don't do 4:00 AM!

Christmas treats

I am smack in the middle of my Christmas baking.  I have completed the peanut butter truffles.  This picture is from last year.  Cowboy told me last night, after they were all made, that he wants to also share with the neighbors!  He took two dozen to work with him today.  The guys have been asking when they would be ready.  I guess I will have to make a double batch next year.

Fruitcake is in the oven.  I make this every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  My mother got the recipe from a co-worker back around 1939.  It has been a family favorite all our lives.  It has to be the moistest, most delicious treat ever!  I love having it for breakfast with a cup of coffee.  Mother always made it in a pan like this.  Since I share with Cowboy's brother and sister, I make them in four mini loaf pans.

I'm taking a break while they bake, then I will clean up my mess and start on the Christmas Danish.  This is also a picture from last year.  Sorry I'm so lazy!  lol


(Time lapse)  Well, they are out of the oven and cooling, so time to wash up that batch of dirty dishes and get the Danish going.  They will take a while as you have to fold, roll and chill several times.  It has become a tradition to have these for breakfast on Christmas day.  I started making these back around 1969 or 1970.  The recipe comes from an old Fleischmann's recipe booklet that I sent off for while still in high school.  I have since lost the original recipe booklet, but was able to find a "new" one on Ebay.  I have also added the recipe to my own personal recipe book that I keep "family favorites" in.  Just in case......

(Time lapse again!)  Have mixed the dough for the Danish and done the first set of rolling and folding and the dough is again chilling.  Two more rollings and foldings to go today, then it will rest in the refrigerator overnight.  I will rest a bit, then make the cheesecake layers for Cowboy's birthday cake (he's a Christmas baby).  I found this recipe in the December 2013 issue of Southern Living.  It combines Cowboy's two favorites: red velvet cake and white chocolate cheesecake.  It requires two 1 oz bottles of red food coloring, which I paid $3 per bottle for at the grocery store!  Who knew red food coloring was made of ground up rubies.  (Just kidding, but judging from the price, it makes one wonder.)

Well, I think that will be enough baking for one day.  Tomorrow I will make the red velvet layers, shape the Danish, put together my goodie bags for family and neighbors, get a shower, and meet Cowboy at his sister's house after he gets off work.  Needless to say, we are having leftovers for dinner tonight!

Songs of the Season II

Just discovered this Quaker design on someone's blog.  It's by Bygone Stitches,  I HAVE to do this one!  No clue when I will get to start on it, but ordered the chart, so I will have it when I am ready.  It finishes at 8.5 x 12.5 on 28 count linen, so it's not huge.  I will never live long enough to do all the projects on my to-do list!

Ground Cover Project

The finished project!  I had another meeting so was not able to attend the event.  I think it turned out amazing!  You can visit their website http://groundcoveraz.com/ for more pictures and information.  If you click on "The Blanket" at the top of the home page, it will take you to a grid of the project.  I make H14.  I chose a section with multiple colors, but looking back on how hard it was to track down all the fabrics (I had to go to 4 different JoAnn's stores in the heat of the summer), I should probably have chosen a section with only one color!  lol  But it was fun to be a part of this project.

This is the one I made.  Looks a bit wrinkled!  lol

Memories

My last aunt passed away this week.  It is sad to realize that generation are no longer with us.  I can still vividly remember being a child and attending family reunions.  I thought it would be so boring to be a grownup and just sit around talking all day instead of being out and running around playing.  I would give anything to be able to sit and talk with them again. 

These photos were taken in August of 1959.  My family had just returned from three years in Germany.  I think this was probably the only time all the siblings were together at one time.  The picture above is my maternal grandparents with their eight children.  The next picture includes the spouses.
This last picture is the grandkids.  Three are missing, probably because they were under a year old and too small to pose. 
That's me, fourth from the left, with my arms resting on my knees (can you believe I'm a great-gramma now?).  We cousins have been reminiscing on facebook, pitching in to identify us all.  There are 18 in the photo.  There eventually were a total of 31 grandchildren.
 
Cherish your family.  Time passes all too quickly.  Now we are the "old folks, sitting around talking" instead of being outside playing and running around.

Honoring a Veteran

My father, John Thomas Herren (1918-2004), served in the Army, Army Air Corp, then the Air Force, for a total of 23 years of service.  He earned a commendation while serving in England, for having the most efficient repair rate for airplanes in WWII.  He did not graduate from high school, but while in the Air Force he got his GED, and went on to get a college degree.  All while raising four daughters.

Pink tutus and pink quilts

Today was a good day.  I joined my Breakfast Club ladies for our monthly breakfast at AJ's in Mesa.  We had to check our calendars to make sure it wasn't Halloween.  Drill Sargent hat and a pink tutu.  Turned out he and his wife were collecting donations out in front of AJ's for Special Olympics.  My friends and I visited from 8 to 11, then we all went our separate ways, my way being to  the 2013 Jelly Roll Race sponsored by the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame.

I got to sew on a Bernina B780 - a big machine with way more bells and whistles than I am used to!  My go-to machine is my 35 year old Kenmore - built like a tank and sews through anything!  I earned the money to buy it by picking apples and peaches for 25 cents a bushel crate.  It was the top of the line at Sears the year before the free-arm came out.  But we have been together a long time and she still runs like a dream. 



I forgot to take a picture of the first finished top, but it was bright primary colors with lots of busy prints.  The second was pinks.  Fitting finish to a day that started out with a pink tutu??

I completed two tops during my two hour stay, so not too bad.  These quilts will be donated to the local homeless once they are quilted and bound.

All in all, a really good day.  I think I will sleep soundly tonight.

Road to Jerome

When we left Prescott, we decided to go home via Jerome.  Sort of out of the way, but a beautiful, winding drive on 89A.  The clouds were beautiful!

Shootout on Whiskey Row

We attended the 8th Annual Shootout on Whiskey Row in Prescott weekend before last.  Our group, the Arizona Ghostriders, won 1st place in the skit competition.  Woo Hoo!  We were up against some stiff competition.  We had some rain, which was a nice change from the heat of the valley.  Cowboy and I stayed through Monday this year.  It was nice to wander around town without the crowds from the weekend.  We went to Murphy's again for lunch, as they did not have my creme brulee on Friday - they were out!  Here are some pictures from the weekend.

It snowed!

Got some snow yesterday evening, but not as much as expected.  Thought we might get more snow this evening, but hubby came home from his fishing trip a day earlier than expected, so the snow will probably be delayed til tomorrow,  It's hard to see in the picture as the thread is almost the same color as the fabric.  I thought the fabric would be dark enough, but....

Stitchy Saturday

I made more progress yesterday.  We had a quiet day at home.  Cowboy was gathering his stuff for his camping trip later this week.  I spent the day reading and stitching.  I took out the name and moved it to the left one stitch.  I was going to leave it, but it nagged at me, so I redid it.  Sigh.  No one but me would have noticed it was a stitch off.  But since I am the one who will have to live with it, I guess I better make myself happy!

Making progress

Spent a couple of hours stitching while Cowboy ran errands, buying stuff for his camping trip next week.  I was not particularly keen on going to Bass Pro Shop and Sports Authority, so sent him out on his own and I got to stay home and stitch!  Later I took him to Texas Roadhouse for Father's Day dinner, as he works on Sunday.

New Project

I started a new crossstitch project this afternoon.  It's not like I don't already have a ton of projects started, patiently waiting their turn to be completed.  But these are small, so maybe I will actually finish them.
They use Crescent Colours and DMC.  There are 4 in the series so far.  The designer finished hers as stand-alones, wrapped around sytrafoam blocks.  I am thinking I will finish them flat and hang them like a banner.  I have limited tabletop surfaces on which to display stuff.  So far I am enjoyong the project.  This is about 3 hours of work.  Somehow it doesn't seem like much.

Sweet Quilt

I volunteered to bring snacks for my quilt guild tomorrow - I always volunteer for May as it's easy to remember (it's my birthday month).  I decided to make sugar cookie quilt blocks.  Definitely not professional, but it was fun.  I cut the cookie dough in 3" squares.  So I guess this also qualifies as a "small quilt"?  lol  I picked 24 blocks from Barbara Brackman's book, so no, no two blocks are alike.
